Research Abstract |
This research aimes to prompte a project called the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), where we carry out both imaging and spectroscopic surveys of half the northern sky using a dedicated wide-field 2.5-m telescope. The imaging survey with a large mosaic CCD camera will produce digital photometric maps in five color bands, with a limiting magnitude of g'-23 mag. These maps will be used toselect about 10^6 galaxies an 10^5 quasars for which medium resolution spectra (lambda/DELTAlambda=2000) will be obtained with two multi-fiber spectrographs. SDSS will produce an innovative database for observational cosmology as well as for many other research fields in astronomy. Construction of the survey facilities is underway and test observations will start in late 1995. The survey will be completed over a five-year period. SDSS has been conducted by the SDSS SubBoard under the Astrophysical Research Consortium (ARC), the chairman of which is B.Margon at the University of Washington. The following seven institutions join the SDSS SubBoard ; Princeton University, Institute for Advanced Study, University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins University, University of Washington, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, US Naval Observatory, and Japan Participating Group (JPG). This fund was used to support the travel expenses of the JPG members to carry out collaborative work with US scientists.
