Research Abstract |
Continuing from the study last fiscal year, the joint research has been focused on the analysis of the effect of technological progress on the marvelous development of economy in Japan and Korea in these decades. Especially, the studies have been done by analyses of (1) Development of electronics industry and textile industry, (2) Competitiveness of industries, especially in terms of the role of small and medium size enterprises, (3) Role of government and (4) Education and manpower. A workshop by all of joint research members of Japan and Korea was held at Kobe on February 16-18, 1994 and the proceedings of papers were summarized in a book. The textile industry played an important role at the early stage of economic development and now electronics industry has been reached at the top level in the world in both countries. In the course of economic development in Japan, small business has played an important role to construct the techno-infrastructure and should be more positively cultivated in Korea. This will help to diminish trade deficit of Korea to Japan. In both countries, engineering education and vocational training have been important to achieve the economic development as a key factor. Now that the development of world economy has been in a maturity period, even in East Asia region, a high rate of economic development will not be expected and a sustainable development should be stressed.
