Research Abstract |
This study's goal is to elucldate the basic structure of Japanese people's moral tendency through speclrying the content of concepts about virtues found among the categorles which make up the history of Japanese ethical thought and arguing the processol historical development of the concepts and the relation of them to each other. First of all. we collect and classiry a various terms of virtue from philo-sophical docments which range over the anclent age to the modern. And then we finally to give a systematical and entire picture of the Japanese concept of virture. In process inteixl of these basic research, we found some problems : The development of Japanese thought has been overwhelmingly influenced by forelgn thought such as Confuclanlsm. Buckism. and the western modernism. so most of its concepts of virtues lnevitably consisls of lorelgn born ones : in addition even a wide derinltion of virtue cannot be solf ovident here. Therefore it would be methodically difflcult to abstract pecullarily of Japanese virtues. Giving consideration to these problems. we have acquired the following results : 1.Confucianist. virthes were scholarly and systematlcally accepted in the Edo era when the Sung studies were introduced into Japan. At that time the concepts of Confucianist virthes were Japanized. Taking Soral Ogyu's Benmel as a case study. we have compiled "Index of Virtues" In the report. 2.The Japanization of Buddhist virtues (especially 'good and evll')Is found in Japan's oldest Buddhist stories Nihon-koku-genpo-zen-aku-irel-ki. The two articles in the report about laws and metempsychosis originated in Buddhism are results from this kind of view. 3.Shigeki Nishimura's study of national morallty and Kitaro Nishida or Tetsuro Watuji's works are considered as exanples of scholarly research into Japanese moral consciousness which changed while the Western modern thought was comming in. The two articles in the report are concerning this point.
