Research Abstract

We approached the theme "comprehensive and systematic study on Japanese practice in international law of the sea" from six aspects : seabed resources development, traffic at sea, protection and preservation of marene environment, EEZ and its effects on fishery convention negotiation, UN convention on the continental shelf and Japan-ROK convention, and international straits and islands.
UN convention on the Law of the Sea was entered into effect on November 11,1994. But we can conclude from our survey that before entry into force Japanese fishery negotiation has been based on the convention and the provisions on the territorial sea or continental shelf were often mentioned.
On July 28 the Agreement relating to the Implementation of the Part X I of UN Convention on the Law of the Sea was adopted. Now Japan is under preparation of ratification of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea with this Implementation Agreement.
