Research Abstract

In order to obtain a valid data base for preventive education for adolescent and young adult population in Japan, a nation-wide survey research (male : 1972, female : 1056, total subject : 3028) was conducted which inquired the college students' knowledge, attitude and actual behavior regarding HIV/AIDS (study I).
Another nation-wide survey was conducted with health bereau personnel and professionals in universities and junior colleges (549 school), which investigated current programs for the prevention of HIV/AIDS and their views on the current situation and needs for future action (study II).
From the students survey it was found that the majority of university students in Japan already possess suficient factual knoeledge on HIV/AIDS at the present moments (1993 academic year).
The high degree of accurate knowledge, however, has not led sufficient changes in the students' behaviors.
From the bureau survey we found that the majority of university health bureaus are considering public compaign as their main role. From the student survey we may conclude that university students with regard to HIV/AIDS prevention are entering "the second stage" in their development, where intervention in their action such as communications are most urgent.
The school programs should focus more on action-oriented interventive measures to facilitate transition from knowing to actually employing preventive measures.
