Research Abstract |
The present team of study has examined the national character of Germany or national consciousness of the German people from language, literature, thinking and other aspects in order to know if the prospective nationalism after unified Germany in 1990 is of the same quality as the nationalism in the previous century, and how the new nationalism is going to develop hereafter. The results of study over the past two years can be summarized in six points : (1) Sociolinguistic study in the 15th and 16th centuries in the formation of a standard German language on the basis of Luther German. (2) Investigation of the role playd by grammarians and linguists in the 16th to the 19th centuries in the formation of standard German language. (3) Investigation of the project to unify the orthography and pronunciation in the 19th and early 20th centuries toward a standard German language and the envolvement of the government and nation thereby. (4) Investigation of cultural and social conditions which enhanced nationalism in Germany in the 19th century. (5) Diachronic study in the conditions for the rise of nationalism and comparative study of the older and post-unification nationalism. (6) Differences in the language of former East Germany and West Germant and investigation of the consciousness of German culture. Results of study summarized above are materialized in the "Report of results". Other problems atill to be solved will be studied firther by the same team under "1996 Ministry of Education Subsidies in Scientific Study. General Study B".
