Research Abstract

This study investigates instructions in listening comprehension in Japanese classes for native and non-native learners, with the aim of identifying instructional problems and of exploring theoretical supports for instruction methods. The following investigations were made :
1. Compilation of bibliography :
collection of the literature on the instruction in listening comprehension in Japanese and other language education
2. Analysis of classroom discourse :
collection and analysis of audio-visual data of Japanese classes in elementary schools
3. Study on listening comprehension tests :
investigation of problems and testing methods based on listening comprehension tests carried out in Japanese classes at a junior high school
4. Analysis of classes in which native and non-native learners participate :
observation of elementary school classes in which non-Japanese and Japanese pupils study together, with regard to construction of commumication network and development of strategies
The above investigations resulted in a hypothesis on structural unit of classroom discourse, as well prospects for viewpoints of audio-visual data analysis such as linguistic marker, relationship between spoken messages and nonverbal information, and posture and position of participants. In the new project which succeeds this one, we plan to collect more data to analyze from a variety of viewpoints. We also plan to explore the possibility of providing the data compiled in this project for academic use.
