Research Abstract |
BARLEY MUTANT,SERPENTINA WAS FOUND TO LOSE THEIR ABILITY TO RESPOND GRAVITY AT THE STAGE OF FIRST LEAF ALTHOUGH THEIR COLEOPTILE CAN RESPOND TO GAVITY.WHEN BARLEY PLANTS WERE POSITIONED PU-SIDE DOWN,THE GROWTH WAS STIMULATED IN THE MUTANT STRAIN ALTHOUGH THAT OF NORMAL STRAIN WAS INHIBITED,SUGGESTING THE OCCURRENCE OF ANOTHER GRAVITY RESPONSE TNAN CURVATURE AND MORPHOGENESIS.EXPERIMENT WITH F-2 SEGREGANTS OF HYBRID BETWEEN NORMAL AND MUTANT AND OR MUTANT AND NORMAL STRAIN OF RICE,REVEALED THAT LAZY GENE INDUCE BOTH ON AGRAVITROPIC RESPONSE OF SEEDLINGS AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE SPREADING HABIT OF TILLER GROWTH.ROLE OF CALCIUM IN ROOT HYDROTROPISM WAS STUDIED WITH MODEL SYSTEM USING PEA GRAVITROPIC MUTANT AGEOTROPUM.WHEN A SORBITOL-CONTAINING AGAR BLOCK WAS UNILATERALLY APPLIED TO THE ROOT CAP,NORMAL HYDROTROPISM WAS INDUCED.THIS HYDROTROPISM WAS INHIBITED WITH THE EGTA,A CALCIUM CHELATOR.THIS INHIBITION WAS RECOVERD WITH THE SUBSTITUTION OF CALCIUM SOLUTION.ADDITION TO THIS,LANTHANUM,AN CHANNEL BLOCKER OF CALCIUM INHIBITED THE HYDROTROPIC CURVATURE.A CALCIUM IONOPHORE,ON THE OTHER HAND,PROMOTED HYDROTROPISM SUGGESTING THE TRANSPORT OF FREE CALCIUM INTO CELL INCREASES HYDROTROPISM.CALCIUM AT ROOT CAP WAS SUGGESTED TO HAVE ROLE IN THE PROCESS OF INFORMATION TRANSPOSITION AT THE SITE OF GRAVITY PERCEPTIION AND THEIR CALCIUM ACTION WAS CONSIDERED TO ACT VIA CELL WALL OF ROOT CAP.
