Research Abstract |
To establish the stereotactic laser balloon hyperthermia treatment for the deep seated small malignant glioma, the experimental study of the interstitial hyperthermia treatment using the Nd : YAG laser unit was reported. The Ultra Line^<TM> fiber (Heraeus Laser Sonics, Inc.) was inserted into the 6F silicone balloon catheter. The laser fiber transmits the laser beam laterally (80゚C). And the balloon was inflated with physiological saline to make the tumor's tissue around the laser fiber hypoxic state. This state means to enhance the thermal effect for tumors The laser power was 5W.The computer was programd with specific parameters to maintatin the 10 mm tissue temperature apart from laser fiber through feed back control at 45゚C.In this condition. 45 minutes hyperthermia treatment was done for the rat's implanted subcutaneous glioma. The thermal damaged area of the tumor was detected the fun-shaped according to the laser beam (10 mm thickness and 100 degree angle). And by rotating the laser fiber in the balloon catheter, the direction of the laser beam can be changed for the tumor's extention.
