Research Abstract |
Sequential changes in the microvasculature and bone tissue surrounding a Ti implant coated with an anodized surface layr, which was installed in the mandibular molar area of Japanese monkeys, have been studied. These changes were surveyed both in unfunctioned and functioned conditions of the implants. Animals were kept for 20 weeks at longest after a metal crown-setting 4,8,12 weeks, respectively, following a fixture implantation, on bone-microvascular corrosion specimens by scanning electron microscopy. Under unfunctioned condition, a new bone was initially found I week after the implantation and developed to plates in 3-4 weeks. No remarkable development was seen on the new bone plate over 12 weeks. Under functioned condition, in which normal occlusion was partially obtained by setting a metal crown, movemnt of the implant was found 1 week after setting the crown immediately following the fixture implantation. 4 or 8 weeks unloaded, then 4 weeks functioned, new bone did not surround the implant yet, although bone trabeculae were thickened. 12 weeks unloaded, then funcitoned for 20 weeks, the interface of the implant was tightly surrounded by a compactioned bone which adhered to the pre-exising compact bone. Ti material coated with an anodized surface layr may promote the development of new bone plate integrating the implant interface. Time for setting the superstructure may be suggested to be during 9-12 weeks after fixture installation.
