Research Abstract |
THE TSUSHIMA ISLANDS LIE BETWEEN THE KOREAN PENINSULA AND THE JAPANESE ARCHIPELAGO.THE FLORA AND FAUNA COMPRISE VARIOUS ELEMENTS FROM THE ASIAN CONTINENT,JAPAN,SOUTH AND NORTH.BECAUSE OF THE RECENT RAPID ECONOMIC ACTIVITY AND GROWTH IN THE ISLANDS,PRESENT STATUS OF WILDLIFE IN TSUSHIMA QUASI-NATIONAL PARK IS THREATEN BY HUMAN ACTIVITY.IN THIS PROJECT,WE HAVE STUDIED ON THE CONSERVATION OF WILDLIFE AND ITS ENVIRONMENT ON THE ECOLOGICAL VIEW POINTS.WE FOCUSED ON THREE SYMPATRIC SPECIES OF CARNIVORES (TSUSHIMA LEOPARD CAT,TSUSHIMA MARTEN AND SIBERIAN WEASEL), WHICH OCCUPIES THE TOP IROPIC LEVEL IN FPPD DHAIN OF THE TSUSHIMA ISLANDS ECOSYSTEM.ESPECIALY,THE TSUSHIMA LEOPARD CAT IS ASSIGNED TO THE ENDANGERED SPECIES IN JAPANESE RED DATA BOOK (ENVIROMENTAL AGENCY,1991), AND RECENTLY IS PROTECTED BY THE NEW GOVERNMENT LAW OF SPECIES STORAGE SINCE 1993. RESULTS OBTAINED IN THIS PROJECTS ARE AS FOLLOWS ; (1) FOOD ITEMS,HOME RANGE AND RANGE UTILITY ON THE TSUSHIMA MARTEN AND THE TSUSHIMA LEOPARD CAT ARE ELUCIDATED BY FECES ANALYSIS AND RADIO-TRACKING.INTERRSPECIFIC COMPETITION ON FOOD RESOURCES ARE DISCUSSED IN THREE SYMPATRIC CARNIVORE SPECIES.(2) WE CLARIFIED THE DENSITY AND ITS SEASONAL CHANGE OF SMALL MAMMALS WHICH ARE RECOGNIZED AS A KEY PREYSPECIES OF THREE CARNIVORES IN THE HABITAT.(3) WE DISCUSSED ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HABITAT PREFERENCES OF MAMMALS (THREE CARNIVORE SPECIES AND SMALL MAMMALS) AND HUMAN ACTIVITY IN THE HABITAT.(4) ADDITIONAL RESEARCH OF THE BEHAVIORAL ECOLOGY ON TWO FELIDAE SPECIES,THE FERAL DOMESTIC CAT AND THE IRIOMOTE WILD CAT,ARE COLLECTED FOR FURTHER UNDERSTANDINGS OF THE TSUSHIMA LEOPARD CAT,BECAUSE OF THE DIFFICULTY OF FIELD RESEARCH ON IT.(5) THE RESULTS OF THE PROJECTS ARE PUBLISHED AS AN INTERIM REPORT AND DISTRIBUTE TO RESEARCHERS AND ORGANIZASIONS CONCERNED.
