| Research Abstract |
The primary purpose of this research is to quantitatively investigate, through the method of the ROXY index analysis, the spatial-cycle phenomena of population observed for urban systems.
Among the tasks conducted in this research are : 1.theoretical and empirical examination of (1) Klaassen's spatial-cycle hypothesis, and (2) the ROXY-index analytical method, 2.empirical analysis of the spatial concentration and deconcentration for (1)an urban system of Japan and (2) urban systems of several other countries, and 3.consideration on urban policies.
The obtained outcomes from the above tasks are as follows : 1.For the Japanese urban system, the value of the ROXY index is increasing since 1970 and shows 30.0 for the period of 1985-90.2.The sub-cycle period for the Tokyo intra-metropolitan areas is around 10-15 years. 3.The production-age population is significantly faster than the aged population with respect to the speed of suburbanization in Tokyo metropolitan area. 4.As to the centralization-suburbanization processes in Japan, the group of large metropolitan areas and that of medium and small metropolitan areas respectively show the coupled-oscillation movement within the same group. 5.In the context of the spatial-cycle race, the USA is the most advanced country followed by Sweden, Australia, Japan and Indonesia in this order among these five countries.
