Research Abstract |
Exposure test and accelerated deterioration test with weather-o-meter were performed on three kinds of paintings (total of seventeen) : traditional material (a mixture of minium <red lead> and animal glue) : recently developed high durable architectural paints for exterior use (a mixture of synthetic resin with organic pigment) : and a mixture of clear synthetic resin and minium. Exposure places are the roof of the Tokyo National Research Institute of Cultural Properties and the site of Hinomisaki Shrine (Taishamachi, Shimane prefecture). The results were studied, analyzed comparatively and discussed at the end. The summary of the test is as follows : ・Tranditional material (minium mixed with animal glue) exfoliated easily and was found to be low in durability. ・Synthetic resin paint in general was found to be much higher in durability. Especially, organo-silicone type and fluorine-containing type resins exhibited highest durability amoungst the test pieces. ・Paint contains minium tends to change color more easily : the blacking seen on the paint mixture of synthtic resin with minium is peculiar. such blacking does not happen in the standarized synthetic resin paints. ・Test result showed that primer treatment, though difference in degree, is quite effective.
