Research Abstract |
Effects of various amino acids and secondery metabolites of vegetable foods were evaluated on synthesis of nerve growth factor (NGF) in cultured mouse astroglial cells. L-tryptophan stimulated NGF production in a dosedependent manner. Serotonin and quinolinic acid slightly increased NGF synthesis. L-Kynurenine had a marked stimulatory effect on NGF synthesis at a dose of 100 muM.In contrast, kynurenic acid had no effect. L-Glutamine, glutamic acid, phenylalanine, and methionine produced no appreciable change in NGF synthesis in cultured astroglial cells. None of coumaric acid, caffeic acid, caffeine, chlorogenic acid produced any appreciable change in NGF production in the cells.
