| Research Abstract |
Recently, it has focused on the analysis of temporal satellite data for earth environmental engineering. It is necessary to develop a database system which consists of mass storages and online archivers for large satellite images and provides retrieval capabilities base on temporal and spacial information. In order to efficiently retrieve a large image whose size is almost 100MB,the on-line archiver provides high bandwidth for data transfer. Thus, we developed a hierarchical storage system which utilizes RAID technology and provides a high data transfer rate, but has only moderate capacity. DIR,a product of Sony Corporation, has a medium data transfer rate and supports high density D1 tapes whose storage capacity is 100GB,and an 8mm tape archiver which contains 200 tapes can be controlled automatically. We also developed special drivers for each storage systems, since it is necessary to migrate data among different storage systems and support efficient data retrieval. Then, we constructed a satellite image database on our prototype system in order to clarify our approach. The temporal and spacial data retrieval manager is also implemented on our hierarchical storage system and the performance of our system was evaluated. We confirmed that our prototype satellite image database is an efficient platform for analyzing temporal and spacial images for earth environmental engineering.
