The purpose of this study is to give the full picture of the Westernstyle theaters which were built in the colonies and foreign settlements established in the late 19th century through the early 20th by Great Britain and other Westers Powers in many parts of Asia
I took up 4 theaters in Japan and China : The Gaiety Theater, Yokohama, The Gymnasium Theater, Kobe, The Public Hall, Nagasaki and The Lyceum Theater, Shanghai. Amang these four only the Gaiety Theater has been studied fully while all the others remain virtually unknown in spite of their significant roles playd in modern cultural history in Japan and China.
It was most fortunate that The Japan Chronicle, an English Language newspaper published in Kobe, could be used in full. For it contained many and important pieces of information on the Gymnasium Theater, and supplied invaluable materials for a list of entertainments and gatherings in the Theater. The comparison of this list with those of other theaters would reveal clearly that they had many things in common. And this common quality will encourage the investigation of these four theaters from the same and common viewpoints.
