Research Abstract

Oblique reflection of a planar shock wave over a porous layr was investigated both theoretically and experimentally. Experiments were conducted using a shock tube and wave structure was visualized through Schlieren method. Particulate bed composed of spherical glass beads and sponge foam rubber were used as porous layr. Porosities of particulate bed and foam rubber were 44% and 98%, respectively. Analytical models for the shock reflection over a porous layr were constructed to compare with experimental results. One is a simple sink theory, in which a deflection angle is the only parameter taking the sink effect of the porous layr into consideration and the detail of the flow in the porous layr is not taken into account. The other model is a more realistic one, in which the pressure wave and the gas flow in the porous phase are considered as well as in the gas phase. In the latter model, two limiting modes of regular reflection were introduced. One is correspoding to an ordinary regular reflection over a solid smooth surface whose porosity is zero, where flow properties are obtained by two-shok theory. The other is a regular reflection over a porous medium whose porosity is almost unity. In the latter mode, it was found that shock relations of three-shock theory gave a set of trivial solutions, and that experimental results of the foam rubber were in good agreement with the trivial solutions with respect to the relation between angles of incidence and reflection. And it was also shown that the results of particulate bed whose porosity was 44% lay in the limited region between the solutions of two-shock theory and trivial solutions.
