Research Abstract

The effect of 3 kinds of dietary oligosaccharide on the colonization of young chickens by Salmonella Typhimurium (ST) was evaluated. Day-old chickens were given either 1) no inulooligosaccharide (IOS) control or 0.5% IOS,2)no IOS and no bacteria (Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium), 0.5% IOS and no bacteria, no IOS and bacteria, or 0.5% IOS and bacteria, 3) no IOS or 0.5% IOS during long times, and 4) no IOS or 1.0% IOS.Chickens were orally received 10^6-10^7 colony forming units of ST.In 2), 3) and 4), the cecal contents of chickens givens IOS had significantly decreased in the number of ST at one day after ST exposure. When fructooligosaccharide and mannooligosaccharide were also evaluated, the same results on evaluations of IOS were gotten. Results of the presents study indicated oligosaccharide was one of carbohydrates at blocking ST colonization.
