Research Abstract |
The EE about 28 refractory depressive patients was evaluated by using FMSS.The result showed that 11 cases were high EE and 17 were low EE.High EE cases had a tendency to repeat depressive phases many times and to get high score on Hamilton depression scale and SDS. Among 12 cases who took psycho-education, 5 showed high EE (H [+] group) and 7 showed low EE (L [+] group). (In the same way, H [-] group indicates 6 high EE cases who did not take psycho-education and L [-] group indicates 10 low EE ones who did not that.) FMSS after psycho-education showed that 2 cases among H [+] group changed into low EE.On the other hand, 7 cases among L [+] group all stayd low EE.There was little change before and after psycho-education on both scales. FMSS was carried out again one year later for all ceses. Only 1 of 2 H [+] cases that changed into low EE after psycho-education had stayd low EE.While one among L [+] group changed into high EE.Concerning the group that did not take psycho-education, one of 4 H [-] cases excluding 2 dropouts from whole 6 changed into low EE.On the other hand, 7 L [-] cases excluding 3 dropouts from whole 10 had all stayd low EE. With regard to depressive symptoms at the final evaluation stage, 2 H [+], 1 H [-] , 2 L [+] and 3 L [-] cases showed a decline of points under 10 on Hamilton scale. The improvement of SDS was found in L [+] group. The results suggested that psycho-education was useful in a short time to change high EE into low EE but it was not in long time. And the effect of psycho-education to depressive symptoms was not found statistically.
