Research Abstract |
We have thought that androgen may act on not only central nervous system but also corpus cavernosum penis. Therefore, we have planned this study. We performed autoradiography using [^3H] prazosin and [^3H] YM 617 to detect and determine the localizatio of alpha_1-adrenoceptors in rabbit penis. The autoradiography demonstrated the presence of alpha_1-adrenoceptor in corpus cavernosum and spongiosum. We studied effect of androgen on alpha_1-adrenoceptors in corpus cavernosum penis using organ bath method and radiobinding assay. Three groups of mature male rabbits were studied over a similar time span ; control, castration and castration+testosterone replacement groups. The contractility of the corpus cavernosum strips increased significantly in the castration+testosterone replacement group, but decreased significantly in the castration group as compared with the control group after adding norepinephrine, phenylephrine and clonidine. The results of the radiobinding assay demonstrated that the density of alpha_1-adrenoceptors of corpus cavernosum decreased by castraiton and increased by testosterone replacement. The results of this study suggest that androgen may act on not only central nervous system but also corpus cavernosum penis, and be involved in sexual function especially penile erectin.
