Research Abstract |
To diagnose the patients of postmenopausal osteoporosis as early as possible using oral signs, we investigated the relationship of the oral indicators to the mineral status of lumbar vertebra and the presence of thoracic vertebral fracture. Our results were as follow. 1.The bone mineral density (BMD) of mandibular cortex measured by quantitative computed tomography (QCT) decreased rapidly after menopause. There was significantly positive correlation between the mandibular cortical and lumbar vertebral BMD which related to the incidence of the vertebral fracture in osteoporotic women. 2.The mandibular inferior cortical width (MCW) on panoramic radiograph was also highly correlated to the lumbar vertebral BMD (r=0.48, p<0.001). Especially, it was presumed that the postmenopausal women with MCW of less than 0.22cm might suffer from latent fracture of the lumber vertebra. 3.There was significant difference in the number of teeth present and the degree of mandibular alveolar bone resorption between the women with and without thoracic vertebral fractures. The highly incidence of edentate was also seen in women with fracture (60%), compared to that without fractre(3%). A significant difference in the incidence of edentate between the two groups was also seen. Our results suggested that the early and/or latent posmenopausal osteoporosis can be detected by evaluating the assessment the MCW and the dental sign such as the number of teeth present.
