Research Abstract

Purpose of the study : The purposes of this study were two fold. First, to examine the factors that increases difficulty of expectorating sputum, from the aspects of the rheological and biochemical characteristics of sputum of patients with respiratory diseases. Second, to clarify aggravation factors and the care required to promote the quality of life of patients with chronic respiratory diseases. For these purposes we gathered data from patients, using a questionnaire.
The results were as follows ; 1. There was a difference between purulent sputum and mucoid-mucopurulent sputum in regard to the limit of estimate of the dynamic viscosity and elasticity of the sputum. 2. The results of the study of patients with chronic respiratory diseases showed that many of the subjects were elderly persons and were on home oxygen therapy, and they had been under treatment for a long time. Furthermore, they had many problems concerning activities of daily living due to age, yet many of them did not use the home service. These results suggested that it is important to support adequately to prevent expectation infection.
This study, revealed that it is necessary to improve the health education of and home service system for elderly patients with chronic respiratory diseases.
In the future, we will plan to conduct a study relating health and welfare services for elderly patients.
