Research Abstract |
The present research investigates the effectiveness of computer as a communication medium for adult's distance education, and aims to provide some suggestions for improving communication interface. In 1993, the characteristics of computer communication were clarified with comparing face-to-face communication. Main characteristics in computer communication were as follows : 1.A lot of information in one utterance. 2.Little reference to communicators' personal episodes. 3.Low redundancy. 4.High consistency in logics. In 1994, an actual case of distance education (a guidance for master thesis) was observed. In this case, the teacher was in New Zealand and the student was in Japan. From this observation, the followin poins became clear : 1.The most serious bottleneck of communication is a technological problem. Technological improvement of computer communication (toward a friendly for beginners and troubleless environment of communication) is urgent. 2.Face-to-face communication is inevitable at least in the first stage of education. 3.Exchanging voice information is effective for communicators to shorten psychological distance.
