THE LAST-YEAR RESEARCH ON THE ACQUISITION OF ENGLISH BASIC SENTENCE STRUCTURES REVEALED THAT THE DEGREE OF ACQUISITION OF THE TARGET SENTENCE STRUCTURES VARIED TO A SIGNIFICANT DEGREE,DEPENDING UPON THE CONTENTS OF THE CHUNKS FUNCTIONING AS THE GRAMMATICAL SUBJECT AND THE PREDICATE VERB WITHIN EACH TARGET SENTENCE STRUCTURE,EVEN THOUGH THOSE TARGET SENTENCES USED IN THE BEST BELONGED TO THE SAME SENTENCE STRUCTURES.THIS SUGGESTS THAT IN THE BEGINNING STAGE OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING,THE DEGREE OF ACQUISITION OF A BASIC SENTENCE STRUCTURE WILL VARY DEPENDING NOT ONLY UPON THE SYNTACTIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BASIC SENTENCE STRUCTURE BUT ALSO UPON THE FAMILIARITY OF THE LEXICAL ITEMS COMPRISING THE CHUNKS WITHIN THE SENTENCE STRUCTURE.THIS YEAR'S RESEARCH HAS AIMED AT GRASPING MORE IN DETAILS THE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE TREATMENT OF BASIC SENTENCE STRUCTURES IN A TEXTBOOK AND THE DEGREE OF VARIABILITY IN ACQUISITION OF BASIC SENTENCE STRUCTURES,BY CONTROLLING THE CONTENTS OF THE CHUNKS

WITHIN THE BASIC SENTENCE STRUCTURES.LIKE IN LAST YEAR'S RESEARCH,TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF TARGET SENTENCES WERE PREPARED ; THE COMMON TYPE AND THE RARE TYPE.IN THIS YEAR'S RESEARCH,TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF TARGET SENTENCES WERE ALSO PREPARED FOR THE RARE TYPE ; THE SUBSTITUTION TYPE,IN WHICH THE LEXICAL ITEMS IN THE CHUNKS WITHIN THE SENTENCE STRUCTURES ARE LESS FAMILIAR TO THE STUDENTS THAN THOSE IN THE TARGET SENTENCES OF THE COMMON TYPE,AND THE EXPANSION TYPE,IN WHICH THE CHUNKS OF THE BASIC SENTENCE STRUCTURES ARE LONGER THAN THOSE IN THE COMMON TYPE.THE RESULTS OF THE TEST INDICATE THAT THE EXPANSION TYPE HAS CONTRIBUTED MORE TO THE VARIABILITY IN THE DEGREE OF ACQUISITION OF BASIC SENTENCE STRUCTURES THAN THE SUBSTITUTION TYPE.THIS SUGGESTS THAT LEARNERS IN THE BEGINNING STAGE WILL HAVE MORE DIFFICULTY IN DEALING WITH SENTENCES WHICH HAVE EXPANDED CHUNKS THAN SENTENCES WHICH HAVE NORMAL CHUNKS BUT LESS FAMILIAR LEXICAL ITEMS WITHIN THEM.THIS IN TURN INDICATES THAT THE ABILITY OF GETTING OVER THE EXPANSION OF CHUNKS WITHIN BASIC SENTENCE STRUCTURES CAN BE REGARDED AS A KEY INGREDIENT FOR THE FULL ACQUISITION OF THOSE BASIC SENTENCE STRUCTURES.
