Research Abstract |
For visually impaired persons, it is difficult to retrieve large scale databases. By hearing from blind persons at operating an information retrieval system, who are novice in a operation, we conclude that difficulties on the operation are mainly cause by the burst of output retrieved data. They accept the data by hearing synthesized voice or touching a braille display device. The accepting speed is much lower than that of watching a CRT screen. They are confused by the amount of many output data at the operation that is over than their accepting ability. A more suitable interface should be developed for the information retrieval by visually impaired persons. We develop an experimental information retrieval inteface with a voice synthesizer and a braille display device. In the interface, an amount of output data is automatically controlled to a suitable level. However, in this stage, it works only on UTOPIA database retrieval service of the University of Tsukuba. In the future, we intend to expand it to work on many other database retrieval services.
