Research Abstract

The surface ozone mixing ratio, X_<ob> observed at Uji and Kita-Kazan (altitude 220m) is partitioned into two contributions ; X_<tr>, transported from the free troposphere free from chemical effects and X_<ch>, chemically produced or destructed in the boundary layr. X_<tr> is estimated from the wind speed on the surface and the ozone mixing ratio in the free troposphere estimated from the surface ozone mixing ratio. X_<ch> is the difference between X_<ob> and X_<tr>.
Monthly mean ozone mixing ratio in the daytime (9-20 JST) at Kita-Kazan is larger than X_<tr> from March to October showing the net photochemical production, and is lower than X_<tr> in other months. Yearly mean ozone mixing ratio observed in the daytime, X_<ob>, is 32 ppbv, the contributions of transport X_<tr> and chemical effects X_<ch> being 25 ppbv and 7 ppbv, respectively. In the night the observed ozone mixing ratio X_<ob> is lower than X_<tr> in all months, showing the contribution of net chemical destruction.
The contribution of photochemistry on the daily mean ozone is positive from April to October and negative in other months. The net effect of photochemistry on the surface ozone in the whole year is negligibly small.
The contribution of photochemistry X_<ch> for the daytime shows positive correlation with solar radiation. X_<ch> is positive in the month in which monthly mean daily global solar radiation is larger than about 9 MJm^<-2>.
Essentially the same conclusions are obtained from the observations at Uji, the magnitude of the contributions of transport and photochemistry being different slightly from those at Kita-Kazan.
