Research Abstract

Since the most important molecular damage leading to biological effects induced by solar UV radiation is DNA photoproducts, the amount of DNA photoproducts must be a direct measure of the biologically effective dose of solar UV radiation. An oligonucleotide, 2'-deoxythymidylyl-(3'-5')-2'-deoxythymidine(dTpdT), has been chosen as the simplest model molecule suitable for this purpose, since its photoproducts can be easily quantitated by HPLC.The results are summarized as follows. (1) The actinometer measuring solar UV radiatio by cis-syn dimers in dTpdT solution has been developed. (2) Pilot field measurements for harmful solar UV radiation at Rikkyo University showed that the dTpdT dosimeter was an easily and accurate dosimeter. (3) Physically measured UVB amounts were different from those using the dTpdT dose by several times, indication that the direct measurement of DNA photoproducts is important for estimating biologically effective dose of solar UV radiation.
