Research Abstract |
Effects of (S) - (+) -abscisic acid (S-ABA) on the growth and carbohydrate accumulation in root of radish were examined. When imbibed seeds were soaked in S-ABA solutions of lower then 50 ppm, stored at 5C for 2 weeks and then sown in pots, the successive bolting was inhibited. Moreover, treatment with S-ABA solution of higher than 100 ppm inhibited the germination. When cotyledons of radish were treated with S-ABA solutions of 1 to 100 ppm, fresh weight of the root decreased at higher treatment. At the same time, the treatment increased the elongating growth but decreased thickening growth. As the result, T/E ratio in S-ABA treatment of 100 ppm (0.8) became higher than that in control (0.6). Moreover, soluble carbohydrate levels in root were not affected by S-ABA treatments. S-ABA is a natural plant hormone. Therefore, it is expected that S-ABA treatment on radish may be harmless for human body. Moreover, it may be useful a damage of the quality.
