The purpose of this study is to evaluate the role of chemical mediators after antigen challenge.
Clinical effects of medication, including antihistamine and antiallergic drug in the treatment of nasal allergy, were evaluated according to patient's symptom score, such as, sneezing, nasal obstruction and rhinorrhea.
In our country, the clinical efficacy of medications on allergic rhinitis depend on doctor's judgment and patient's impression, therefore, more objective method should be required. We have evaluated the measurement of chemical mediators in nasal lavage in 21 patients.
The antigen challenge was performed by antigen discs on bilateral inferior turbinate for 10 minutes. Nasal lavage fluid were collected before and after antigen challenge, by washing with 40 ml of saline. The amount of histamine and leukotrienes in nasal lavage increased significantly on the early responses.
Antiallergic drug, ketotifen, sprayd topically over the nasal mucosa, 4 times a day, for 2 weeks, inhibited chemical mediators in some cases. These deta suggest the clinical effect of antiallergic drugs in the treatment of nasal allergy.
