Research Abstract |
In September/October 1994 the first field visit was made to Tanzania. Meetings were held in Dar es Salaam with representatives of government departments responsible for energy, communications, meteorology and others. A visit was made to the Engineering Faculty of Dar es Salaam University, which agreed to become responsible for Tanzania's participation in the project. A visit was then made to a potential rectenna site on Longido Plain north of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro. A lecture was also given on the SPS 2000 project to the Tanzania Institution of Engineers. In February/March 1995 a visit was made to Papua New Guinea. In Port Moresby meetings were held with representatives of government departments responsible for energy, communications and provincial affairs. Visits were then made to four different provinces near the equator where a rectenna might be sited-New Ireland, Manus, East Sepik and Sandaun. Finally a visit was made and a lecture given at the Department of Electrical and Commu

nications Engineering at Unitech in Lae, which will be responsible for further collaboration on the project. In October 1995 a visit was made to Brazil. A lecture was given at the National Space Research Institute (INPE) where collaborative research was proposed. At the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB) in Brazilia there was interest in the possibility of launching modules of the SPS 2000 satellite from the equatorial Alcantara Launch Center (CLA) then under construction. A visit was then made to CLA where it was suggested that a rectenna could also be sited within its 600 square kilometers. In March 1996 a visit was made to Indonesia. In Jakarta visits were made to government departments responsible for technology, for aviation and space and others. Following that, a visit was made and a lecture given at Satya Wacana Christian University in Salatiga, which will be responsible for future collaboration. A visit was then made to the Governor of the Moluccas in Ambon, after which a visit was made to potential rectenna sites in Ternate and Halmahera. Less
