Research Abstract |
The purpose of this research program is to analyze how wood structure and other morphological characters of trees are changed with elevation of altitude in Himalayan region. For this purpose, two field research were done during the term of this program, During these field researches, plant specimens were collected and dried as herbarium specimen, small cubic blocks of wood and bark were cut off from erect trees using saw, chisel and hammer with their voucher herbarium specimens. 1.Field research in 1994. June 1,1994-September 10,1994. Area : Mt. Manaslu and Mt. Annapurna region, Central-West Nepal. Route : Kathmandu-Trisuli Bazar-along Burigandaki-around Ganeshu Himal-Larkya La(alt.4900m)-along Dudhu Khora-along Marsyanagdi Hhora-Thorung Pass (alt.5110m)-along Kali Gandaki-Pokhara-Kathmandu(about 45 days). Collection : about 18,000 sheets of herbarium specimens, about 780 wood samples, about 490 bark samples and many samples for DNA analysis were collected and carried out to Japan. 2.Field Research in 1996. January 6-February 3,1996. Area : Chitwan National Park, Central Nepal. Route : Kathmandu-Sauraha (Head Quarter of National Park)-inside of National Park-Kathmandu (15days). Collection : about 2350 sheets of herbarium specimens, 201 wood samples, 201 bark samples, 130 samples of sheeds, flowers, 60 samples of root and rhizomes and 19 samples for DNA analysis were collected and carried out to Japan. The herbarium specimens had been identified in major part and were distributed in some international herbaria and research institutes of botany including Tohoku University, University of Tokyo and National Herbarium, Department of Plant Research, Nepal. Collected wood and bark samples have been sectioned and analyzed.
