Research Abstract |
During the period 26/10/1995 to 9/11 five researchers from Japan (Hirajima, Enami, Wallis and two graduate students) undertook field studies of high grade metamorphic rocks in Shandong Province, China. The Japanese research team was accompanied by Drs Ye Kai and Zhai Mingguo from the Academica Sinica with two drivers and two local support staff. Dr Ishiwatari, who was at the time in Beijing as a Monbusho researcher, also joined the study group. One of the goals of this field work we to document the occurrence and field relationships of the high-grade metamorphic rocks and surrounding gneisses and therefore concentrated our efforts on the well-exposed coastal regions. In particular, two localities at Yangkou to the east of Qingdao and Haiyansuo near Ryushan were chosen for detailed mapping at 1 : 500 scale. In the Yangkou region Hirajima et al (1993) report granitic rocks that have undergone ultra high-pressure (UHP) metamorphism. In the present field studies we were able to distinguish

bodies of eclogite and lenses of relatively undeformed intermediate to granitic igneous rocks (locally preserving intrusive contacts) surrounded by strongly deformed acidic gneiss. The preservation of rock types with different degrees of deformation and overprinting y later metamorphism is essential to constructing a sequence of tectonic events in the area. In the Haiyansuo area we made detailed studies of the relationships between opx bearing eclogite and the surrounding acidic gneiss. We are at present studying the samples collected at the above two localities in particular with the aim of obtaining enough structural data to test hypotheses about the possible emplacement mechanisms for the UHP rocks. In December 1995 Dr Banno took part in an international coference held in Stanford University in the USA and gave a paper summarizing the most important findings of our group's research in China. Banno also took the opportunity to discuss with Dr Cong from the Academica Sinica the best way to continue our collaboration and the most fruitful type of laboratory work to undertake. As a result of these discussion it was decided to receive a young researcher from China (Dr Ye Kai)/to work in Kyoto for three months from March this year. Less
