| Research Abstract |
1.Study on intestinal helminths and environmental hygiene at Barru in Sulawesi : The object of this study is to clarify the present status of intestinal parasitic infection in Barru and to detect the pathways of transmission of the parasites. A formal survey with questionnaires was conducted for 1405 inhabitants of 4 areas including 2 villages, Pancana and Lalolang, in Tanete rilau (coastal) and 2 villages, Lonpo Liaja and Pattappa, in Tanete riaga (mountainous) of Barru to analyze the conditions of environmental hygiene and people's sanitary behavior. For every sample of household the following data were obtaind by a interview : house type, number of inhabitants, number of children, the defecation site, construction and type of latrine, educational level, food habits etc. An occupation in the most of owners was farmers in mountainous area and fisher men in coastal area. ang of coastal area. The type of the toilets was Angsa which has tank in more than 80% of inhabitants in the survey areas. The inhabitants without toilet use rivers and fields as a toilet in mountainous areas and sea in coastal areas. After using the toilet, 60-80% of inhabitants have the custom of washing their own hands. Some inhabitans have the habitat going to the toilet with barefoot. Drinking water is usually boiled but in Lonpo Liaja of mountainous area, 10% of the housewives do not boil it. 2.Mosquitoes in and around human houses in Barru, South Sulawesi : Mosquito larvae were collected in Barru from 26 July to 4 August, 1994. Approximately 7 species were collected in this suevey. Among the species collected, Aedes aegypti was dominant, commonly found in the artificial containers in house and around the houses. Aedes albopictus was rarely found in only mountainous villages of Tanete riaga. Cx.quinquefasciatus was also collected many. 3.Taxonomy and bionomics of blackflies in Indonesia with special reference to their medicoveterinary importance : In Central Sulawesi 11 species were collected. Among them two were probably new to science. In South-east Sulawesi only five species including one new species were gathered. All the three new species are assignable to Simulium (Simulium). These result increased the number of species distributing in Sulawesi 22 to 25. On the other hand, in West Sumatra, a total of 16 species were obtained, of which five were newly recorded and two were new species each belonging to Simulium (Gomphostilbia) and Simulium (Simulium). In North Sumatra, five known species were collected. The blackfly fauna of Sumatra had nine species. The present survey added about 10 more species.
