| Research Abstract |
Fais is a raised coral island situated in the western Caroline islands, Micronesia. The first archaeological excavation carried out on Fais in 1991 by Intoh revealed that the prehistoric Fais population has kept very active contacts with their neighboring high islands. The excavated foreign material included a number of potsherds, some stones, a piece of resin from a rain forest tree, Melanesian type trolling fishhook shank made of pearl shell, and so on.
With such evidence, this project was organized to examine the external relationships of the prehistoric Fais population. Although the major focus was on the prehistoric population itself, some related studies in the neighboring islands were carried out. These inclide the examination of the skeletal remains from southern China and from southern Philippines, comparative analyzes of material culture between western Micronesia and Southeast Asia, and the collection of resin samples from rain forest tree growing in Malaysia and the Philippines.
