Research Abstract

The Native Title Act which was made into force on January 1994, had a great impact both on Aboriginal people and non-Aboriginal people in Australia. For the first time in the history, Aborigines got rights in land as an personnel, as a family, and as a tribe. As a result of that the big changes had happened in the attitude to the religious and economical rights in the land in Aboriginal societies.
This project aimed to figure out the modern situation in Aboriginal society, especially in economical sphere, after the introduction of the new law. The economical changes at this stage will be sure to have an future impact on the other changes in the society, and it is expected to be able to find out what kind of society Aboriginal people seek for. This kind of study in the early stage of the current change suppose to be beneficial for minority studies in other areas.
For that purpose, Masatoshi Kubo, Shigenobu Sugito and Sachiko Kubota were sent to convey the field research with cooperation w … More ith Nicholas Peterson form ANU and Stephen Harris from Northern Territory University. The area of study was Western Arnhem Land (Oenpelli and Maningrida) and Eastern Arnhem Land (Galiwinku and Yirrkala). These area are common in some cultural aspects and differ in other and in economical and social situation. This research was focused on the change happened in the arts and crafts, gender relationships and change in the communication sch as computerization.
From this research quite beneficial findings were made clear. In Arnhem Land area, since the 1970's, the land rights were recognized but not in the tribal base. And because of the introduction of the Native Title Act, the public interest on Aboriginals were surely widen in Australian society in general. As a result of that, in economy, it is clear that Aboriginal people starting to have more access to monetary economy. People are using computer more frequently, which beginning to have impact on their way of communication. In the aspect of traditional knowledge, which used to be closed to women, mainly because the cash is concerned with the production of religious objects, gender relation in these area is also starting to chage. From these findings and others, it is clear that the idea about the possession of the land and of distribution of the wealth are beginning to flick. In accordance with the field work, the researchers had establised the base for the future research with the institutions in the Australia including the understandings of their research actvities in the field.
