Research Abstract |
The blood or sera from ethnic minority were collected in Kamtchakka, Uzbekistan (former USSR) , Unnan (south China) , Malaysia, Thailand, Singapol and south India to see prevalence of human retroviruses especially HTLV-1 and phylogenetic relation of these viruses isolated there. These studies will provide us the informations on origin and evolution of these viruses as well as movement of human beings in the past. The collected samples and the results so far obtained were followed. 1. Kamtchakka In total 622 blood samples were collected from three minority villages (Esso, Tighil and Sedanka) consisting seven minority groups such as Evenki, Koriak, Italman, Chucka Tokucha, Lamut and Alute. As a result, no serologically typical positive cases were found, but there were several suspected cases. At present, we are trying to isolate and to detect the genomes of variant viruses from these samples. 2. Uzbekistan There are jewish population who moved from Iran and has been isolated from Moslem worl

d in Buchara and Samarkand. We collected totally 279 blood samples from them including leukemia and neurologically disordered patients. Serologically they are all negative but we are trying to detect virus genomes from suspected cases. 3. Unnan (south China) In total 150 serum samples were collected from minority groups consisting of I,Tai, Risu, Nashi and Myao. They were all negative for virus antibody. Six rhesus monkeys in Kunming primate facilities having HTLV-1 antibody was found and we are now isolating the virus from them. 4. Thailand, Malaysia, Singapol and South India Seropositive one was found from a lymphoma patient in south Thailand. In Malaysia 2,000 serum samples were screened and resulted in all seronegative. In addition, DNA extraction from seropositive Chinese is now going. In India, a new seropositive case was found in Andrapradesh State. Nine percent of seropositive cases were found in 1,000 samples collected from Papua Newguinea, which has been kept in Singapol University. Less
