Research Abstract |
1. Descriptive epidemiological features on gastric cancer in Costa Rica and Guatemala have been examined, based on obtainable vital statics data and cancer registry data. 2. Classifiable gastric cancer cases (750 cases) in Costa Rica and those (1,095 cases) in Guatemara derived from cancer registries have been analyzed in order to see histological distribution by Lauren's classification in Costa Rica and Guatemala. 3. Case control study has been conducted by using questionnaire for life style and dietary habits, and by serum samples for H.pylori and Pepsinogen. Major results 1. In Guatemala, it was observed that gastric cancer death rates in female are higher than those in male. 2. In Costa Rica, proportion of intestinal type stomach cancer in female increased dramatically as age increased. In Guatemala, proportion of intestinal type stomach cancer both in male and female tends to be slightly increased as age increased. 3. In case control study with available cases in Costa Rica (50 cases) and in Guatemala (32 cases), PGI/II ratio with less than 3.0 showed relative risk of 3.0 (1.3-6.7) and of 2.2 (0.6-8.5) in Costa Rica and Guatemala, respectively. No striking differences have been observed for various risk factors mainly due to small number of cases so far.
