Research Abstract |
To develop a design method for semi-rigid frames based on the ultimate state design procedure, the following three main studies were performed : 1.The program for estimation of column effective length factor of semi-rigid frames was made which is used to evaluate the ultimate column end moments and to check column stability. Using this program and taking a semi-rigid portal frame example, the numerical values of column effective length factor were discussed with reference to initial connection stiffness and ultimate moment capacity of connections. Comparing the results obtained from the present method with Lui's and Barakat-Chen's simplified methods, it was shown that those simplified methods may not always give conservative values. 2.As for the connection stiffness of end-plate connection, numerical analyzes were performed by using updated moment-rotation data base of beam-to-column connections. Analyzing beam end moments and drift of multi-bay multi-story semi-rigid frames, it was shown

that end-plate connections having the initial connection stiffness stiffer than 10^6 kip-in/radian can be regarded as rigid connections, and this defined value is comparable with the values given from EC3 and Bjorhovde et al's connection classification systems. 3.The design system with engineering work station use composed of routines was developed in this project till date. The routines are : 1)data base of physical properties on wide flange sections, angles and fasteners ; 2)routine for evaluation of non-linear moment rotation curves of semi-rigid connections ; 3)routine for estimations of member forces and drift of frame by means of second-order elastic analysis method ; 4)routine for evaluation of column effective length factor based on the alignment chart approach ; 5)routine for estimation of column end moments by means of B1/B2 method ; 6)routine for stability check of columns ; and 7)graphic routines for each design stage. By using this procedure, it was confirmed that the design of semi-rigid frames based on the AISC-LRFD specification can be easily performed in design offices. Less
