Research Abstract |
The great numbers of residual problems in artificial heart disturb its longterm clinical use. We, University of Tokyo and Wien University, had cooperated for the past 2 years about the basic problems in the artificial heart. The objectives of our cooperation in this project is to solve many problems disturbing the longterm clinical application of total artificial heart and cardiac assist. In this final year, the following results have been accomplished by our cooperation. 1. The anatomical fittness, blood compatibility, material and its molding method of undulation pumped TAH and flow transformed pulsatile TAH that were developing in University Tokyo were discussed. 2. As for MAD (Modified Assist Device) that was developing in University Tokyo and could be approached transcutaneously, we exchanged opinions from the view point of clinical use. 3. We discussed about 1/R control method that was a quite new control method of TAH and could survive a TAH goat more than 500 days in University of

Tokyo. Especially, they interested in the mechanism of the method, its possibility to use clinically and its application to implantable centrifugal pump that was developing in Wien University. 4. Concernig to the blood compatibility of the materials used in the artificial heart, the data used in the longest survival goat was discussed especially about the cause of carcification generated on the Jellyfish valves. 5. We discussed about how to evaluate hemody namics and microcirculation during the artificial heart pumping. Implantable apparatus to observe the microcirculation using CCD and cathecolamine sensor that were developed in University of Tokyo were also discussed. 6. Blood compatibility, performance and control method of implantable centrifugal blood pump that have been developing in Wien University were discussed. 7. As a bridge patient were in the University hospital at that time, we could get many informations of performance, blood compatibility, safety and reliability of the clinical use of Novacor implantable left ventricular assist device as the bridge to the heart transplntation. These results were reported at 22nd Annual Meeting of European Society for Artificial Organs, 10th Biannual Conference of International Society for Artificial Organs and other domestic conferences.
