Research Abstract |
Remarkable developments of active structural response control technology have been made in civil and architectural engineering fields. In the 9th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering (9WCEE) held in 1988, recent studies for structural response control were reported and discussed, and a great interest in response control technology arose in many researchers and engineers. The main objective of active response control of structures is the reduction of response induced by uncertain dynamic disturbances such as earthquakes or strong winds. Actively controlled systems in civil and building structures are mainly the type using control force generated by actuators or the type with devices for changing structural characteristics such as stiffness or damping. To start this research project, updating and rearrangements of databases for recent studies of response control technology in the mechanical, civil and architectural engineering fields, were carried out. These materials were accumulat

ed from databases based on investigations by cooperative research group of Japan and the U.S.started since 1994. Most recent databases are arranged systematically on several physical objectives : control theorem, control device and system design for practical applications. State-of-Art-Report for each research objective was published through detailed investigations and discussions by research project groups composed from researchers of Japan and the U.S. Earthquake response data of the buildings equipped with structural control devices during Northridge Earthquake in January 17,1994 and Hyogoken Nanbu Earthquake in January 17,1995, was collected. Then, characteristics of behavior of these controlled building structures during earthquakes were studied by comparing observational and analytical data. In March, 1996, U.S.-Japan workshop in cooperative research on structural control were held in Kyoto/Japan. This workshop is closely related with the research program "Development of Intelligent Structural Control for Large Earthquakes" which was submitted to the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science. The Principal Investigator and researchers of this program mainly planned and managed the workshop. During the workshop, the participants inspected the real size structural control test facilities at Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University, and exchanged information on development of innovative structural control systems. Recent developments concerning active control are reported both by Japanese and U.S.researchers. The contents were selected from special theme session of "Active Control of Stuctures" in the 11th World Conference of Earthquake Engineering (11WCEE) held in June, 1996. Then, a new direction was proposed. In December, 1996, the 2nd international workshop of structural control was organized as a program of this work, and summarizes "Building Control", "Bridge Control", "Health Monitoring", "Case Studies of Control" and "Design Philosophy of Control Codes".
