Research Abstract |
The Solar-A ( 'Yohkoh' ) satellite was launched in August 1991, and has been returning X-ray data of the solar corona and the solar flares. An important knowledge which Yohkoh has brought to us is that a full understanding of the coronal physics inevitably requires supporting ground-based observations. Such observations are being carried out both in Japan and in China, in optical and radio wave bands. This project aimed at combining high quality optical and radio data obtained at the observing facillities in both countries together with X-ray data from Yohkoh. We have conducted a similar cooperative research program in 1992-93, so that the scientists in the two counties were ready for the present research program. In order to report the results of cooperative researches, in the period from August 31 to September 5,1994, a workshop on solar physics was held in Dunhuang, China. Thirteen Japanese and about thirty Chinese scientists participated in the workshop. Studies combining Yohkoh X-ray data and ground-based optical or radio data have been initiated in China, which we believe are the contributions from this cooperative program. Another topic of discussion in this project is the space program on solar physics in the future. Both countries have plans to launch an optical telescope to observe the sun in high spatial resolution. The continuation of this program was strongly supported from the participants of both countries. Chinese side will apply for Chinese Science Academy and Natural Science Foundation of China, and Japanese side will apply for the Ministry of Education international research grant, and also for Japan Society for the Promotion of Science for support.
