Research Abstract |
This project was carried out as a collaborative research project of Kyushu University (Research Institute of Comparative Education and Culture) with the NUFFIC (The Netherlands Organisation of International Cooperation in Higher Education). The project is related to a new project on higher education initiated by OECD/CERI.The main purpose of this research project is to clarify the future prospect of internationalization of higher education by investigating the current state and problems of internationalized curricula in higher education. In recent years, there is a remarkable increase of educational provisions and programs focusing on internationalized curriculum among higher education institutions in the OECD member countries. Here in this study, the internationalized curricula means curricula with an international orientation in content, aimed at preparing students for performing (professionally/socially) in an international and multicultural context, and designed for domestic studen

ts as well as foreign students. By using a common research scheme and protocol suggested by OECD/CERI,more than a dozen institutions were sampled for case studies in Japan. An international workshop was held at Kyushu University in January, inviting experts from OECD/CERI and Nuffic, in order to find common issues pertaining to internationalization of curriculum. Internationalized curricula include a variety of innovative programs and provisions, such as curricula with an international subject/course contents, curricula which prepare students for defined international professions, curricula leading to internationally recognized professional qualifications, curricula leading to joint or double degrees, curricula in foreign languages which address explicitly cross-cultural communication issues and which provide training in intercultural skills, curricula in which content is especially designed for foreign students, and so forth. Academics in both countries seem to be greatly concerned over the issue of working language in teaching (either host language or international language -- English), as the number of international students tends to grow.
