Research Abstract |
In this past year our joint project has convened two conferences : one at each of our two universities. In july Professor Naoki Sakai visited this university and gave a talk on the theme of "Translation". We also held a discussion roviewing his recently published book (Shizan Sareru Nihongo/Nihonjin). professor Chen Kuan-Hsing of Taiwan participated in this conference. Also we took advantage of the presence of most of the central members to discuss the continuation of this joint project between our two universities. In October Iyotani and Niwa both visited Cornell university for the conference there. Niwa gave a talk on the topic of "The identities of Koreans residing in Japan, " while Iyotani's talk concerned "Japanese society and immigration." Through our joint research, we have confirmed several points regasrding Japan studies : 1) that Japan will continue to be looked at as one area within the field of area studies : 2) that with the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the ideological system on which it centered, the methods of area studies-including Japan Studies-have become quite unstable ; 3) with that instabilitiy there is a necessity to clarify the pros and cons of the cultural studies which occur within Japan studies as well as a necessity to reconsider the methods of area studies and Japan studies in general. As the fruits of our joint research we have seen the publication of the volume of essays. Furthermore, this book has been translated into English and will soon be published by Cornell University Press. In the coming years we plan, along with a deepening of the joint research between our two universities, to widen the scope of the Japanese researchers participating in the project by including new themes, and we plan to expand the project to include researchers from Australia and other areas of the Asian-Pacific region.
