Research Abstract |
1. Development of biomedical materials : beta-chitin which was purified from the soft bone of cuttlefish was utilized for implant materials by freeze drying of it's dope or by vacuum filtration of it's dope to the non-woven fabric of polyester (PNWF). alpha-chitin which was purified from the shell of snow crab was deacetylated by a caustic soda and was utilized for the wound covering material by the treatment of mixer on chitosan threads. (Shigemasa, Saimoto, Sashiwa) 2. Veterinary application of these materials : Chitin sponge was applied to large tissue defects or skin defect, and chitin-PNWF composite was applied to subcutaneous tissue defect, tendon injury, defect of diaphragm, Many wondering effects were noted in many clinical cases. (Matsuhashi, Minami, Okamoto) 3. Investigation of wound healing acceleration mechanism : Many bioactive agents were induced by chitin subcutaneous implantation such as FGF like factor, IL-1, PGE2 and activated compliment. It was clearly demonstrated that chitin and chitosan were a chemotactic factor of PMNs. (Tanaka, Tanigawa, Minami, Okamoto) 4. Investigation of wound healing acceleration on experimental created tendon gap : It was clearly demonstrated that chitin accelerated gap healing in the experimental tendon injury model by the histomorphometric and mechanical testing results. (Nelson, Stashak, Norrdin, Okamoto) 5. Joint seminar : Three times Joint seminars were held. The first joint seminar was herd in CSU (Sept.12-19, '94), the second one was herd in Tottori (Nov.2-9, '94), and final seminar was herd in CSU (Jul.14-24, '95). 6. Publication to the International Congress : The 6th International Congress on Chitin and Chitosan (Gdynia, Poland, 16-19, Aug., '94), World Veterinary Congress '96 (Yokohama, Japan, 3-9, Sept, '95)
