Research Abstract

化合物半導体のヘテロ構造中の低次元電子ガスは,その低次元電子物性の理解が進むと共にいくつかのデバイス応用が達成された.今日半導体量子サイズ効果の研究は一段落し,今新しいフェーズに入っている.即ち結晶の完全性と純度が向上し,電子が低温においては散乱されずに伝導すること,及び微細加工技術により1nmオーダで制御された半導体超微細構造を作ることが可能となったため,デバイスの端子間に電子の波動としての性質が直接観測されるようになった.このため,従来の物性とは全く異なった新しい現象が次々と発見されている.本重点領域研究では,極微細な固体デバイス中の新しい物理現象をより深く理解し,その制御法を探索するとともに,そのような新しい物性を直接応用したデバイスを考案し,その基礎的特性を調べることによって新しいデバイスの可能性を提示し「量子位相エレクトロニクス」と呼ぶことが出来る新しい研究分野を創出することを目的として研究を行った.
本総括班は,本重点領域研究が円滑に遂行されるため,研究者間の相互交流,研究討論,情報交換を積極的に推進する役割を担うとともに,常に研究の理念を検討し,全体として正しい方向に進行しているかどうかをチェックしてきた.本年度は重点領域研究の研究成果の最終とりまとめを行った.具体的な活動は以下のとおりである.
(1)各班の研究成果を公表するために国際シンポジウムNano--Physics and Electronics(NPE97)を東京大学六本木キャンパスで開催した.会議の報告集を学術雑誌Solid State Electronicsに出版した.
(2)研究成果報告書のとりまとめと出版を行った.
(3)研究分野の現状と将来展望,さらには新しい研究者の養成のために,英文の解説書を執筆し,Springer VerlagからMesoscopic Physics and Electronicsとして出版した.なお,このために新たに学術出版のための科学研究費補金「研究成果公開促進費」を受けた.
