Research Abstract

本重点研究では、形態進化と分子進化の接点、過去に生存した生物のDNA単離と系統進化、太古の生物の進化と真核生物の起源、及びその他の領域研究として、ウィルスの分子進化学的アプローチの確立、並びに分子系統樹推定法と種々の遺伝子解析法の開発・改良、の4つの項目を重点的に研究する組織を組み、分子進化学の新しい展開を試みた。本年度は締めくくりの年であり、過去4年間の研究活動の総括と将来への展望を期して、「生物の多様性と進化」と題する公開シンポジウムを平成10年1月10日-11日の2日間、東京で開催した。分子進化学を中心に形態レベルの進化も含め、16人による講演を行い、多数の参加者と活発な討論に終始した、極めて意義深いシンポジウムであった。本重点研究は、絶滅した生物からのDNAの単離に関しては、一部問題の困難さのため、十分な成果は得られなかったが、全体としては予想以上の成果を上げることができた。加えて、本重点研究メンバーが中核となって、進化学会を来年度発足させることを決議した。現在、その準備を進めているが、これは本重点研究の大きな成果の一つであろう。また、複数の班員による分子進化学の平易な解説書を出版し、成果の公表と普及に努めた。本重点領域研究を通じて、これまでの分子進化学の枠が大きく拡大し、新しい大きな研究グループが出来たこと、形態進化と分子進化の接点という大きな共通のテーマでまとまることが出来たことは、新しい分子進化学の発展の上で有意義であった。
