Research Abstract |
(1) The purpose of the present study was to investigate generative processes of the visual space perception by describing psychogical experiences which occur in the visually reduced situation called Ganzfeld. We focused our attention on the dynamism of 'external world' and 'self' which were experienced in this sort of 'space', attempted to analyze the phase which might be referred to as 'prespatial', and discussed reported experiences in connection with related phenomena of visual space perception. (2) Psychological experiences with Ganzfeld were basicly similar to those which had been obtained by our previous studies. In the present study, however, we corresponded those experiences with changes in the pupillary size simultaneously recorded in the process of observation. Results obtained here were as follows : 1) Marked changes in the pupillary size occurred in advance to reported changes in the phenomenal brightness by 500-1500ms. 2) In addition to those discrete changes, a progressive

ly ongoing pupillary contraction was observed in the time course of observation. 3) Minute fluctuations in the pupillary size ceased after the phase in which an observer repoted ambiguity of the phenomenal boundary between external world and self. 4)Latency to perceiving complete darkness of the visual field was negatively correlated to physical brightness of the field. 5) Those results were obtained selectively with the Ganzfeld of red light. 6) In spite of remarkable differences in richness of reports among subjects, there was a high level of generality for the content and the temporal change of reports. (3) Some of the results mentioned above were originally obtained in the present study, whilst others (3,5,6) were reconfirmed of those obtained earlier by the head investigator. Further step must be taken to propose a model which integrates those findings. With such a type of model, a productive suggestion could be given for generative processes of visual space perception. (4) Raw materials of oral reports collected could be used not only for the analyzes of visual perception but also for the discussion in the fields of personality psychology and psychopathological approach.
