Research Abstract

Reflecting the main findings of our first research project on family privatization and individuation, we focus in this second research study on the strategic tasks ; 1. ascertaining the social sectors showing well the individuation of the family ; and 2. understanding both coordination and integration aspects of the families. For this purpose we selected to compare three different groups of wives and their husbands ; wives from all Japan with higher educational or professional careers of a graduate school ; wives in Sitamachi area of Tokyo ; and of the junior college students in Hyogo prefecture.
The main results of this study are as follows ;
1. Wives with higher educational and professional background generally show stronger orientation to family inividuation than other two groups.
2. Both wives of Sitamachi area and mothers of the junior college students prefer family individuation to the similar extent to each other, but the lesser extent to wives with higher educational and professional background.
3. Orientation to family individuation is likely to be going along at the same time with family coordination efforts. These efforts be observed both in wives and husbands, although family coordination process is much more contributed by wives.
4. Emotional bonding and indiziduation are not necessarily negative relation despite the inconsistent results of the previous study.
Last finding can be consistently interpreted by introducing a kind of third variables such as economic strata, wives' educational and professional careers. This implies a possible discussion that an integrated family involving both individuation and coordination can be found in Japan through careful observation with attention to social stratification of the family. These research findings and implication lead us further to the task for elaborating of our original concept of "individuated privatization."
