Research Abstract |
The pollution of subsurface environment and groundwater is not same as the pollution of atmosphere or surface water (i.e., lake and river) , since the former is not detected visually. This is one of the reasons why the problem is not socially recognized and any reasonable approach has not been performed so far. In Japan, around 30% of municipal water supply relies on the groundwater, and the ordinary activity of human life is carried out above these subsurface environments. The final goal of this research was to establish a comprehensive system for the management of subsurface environment and groundwater with the understanding of the present status of the pollution and remediation technology. In this research, the problems associated with the following subjects were listed and analyzed : 1.Mechanisms of the pollution and remediation 2.Mathematical models for the assessments of pollution and remediation 3.Monitoring systems for the pollution and remediation 4.Risk assessment methodologies for the environment and human health 5.Remediation technologies and their effectiveness 6.Comprehensive systems for the management
