Research Abstract |
This research has been pursued for three years since 1994, and the results of individual member's investigations and group discussions are accumulated mainly on the three axs which are the history, structure, and function of the exhibition space as a cultural and social setting. 1. The exhibition space has, as a whole, its history of development from an inner or attached space in the building to a widely open and neutral one. This transition, closely related with the social and cultural context of the times and localities, has also connections with transformation of consciousness both of displayrs and spectators, and bring about changes of meanings of the exhibits themselves. 2. The structure of the exhibition space varies especially today ; from the traditional type which includes all the exhibits in a building to various kinds of new ones : the exhibits are displayd in an open space, all the exhibits themselves form an exhibition space, and electronic media are used as a way of presentation of information. The audio conference "Images for ears" we held in 1995 is one of these experiments to examine the possibilities of the new-type exhibition. And as the changes of the qualities of the exhibits themselves lead to more pluralistic composition of space even in the traditional type, we made firsthand surveys in several museums from the first stage of their preparation for exhibitions. 3. Since the exhibition space has a function of making some relations between the things displayd and the visitors, its contents and forms of communication is a major problem. In this respect, the report from the actual scene (by Ms. Noriko FUKU,curator, in 1996) about education in museum, which has recently been a talking point, was quite fruitful.
